Soil and fertilizer

How To Grow Wheatgrass: Before Planting

Preparation: take enough seeds to fill your tray of wheatgrass. Rinse the seeds until the water that comes out is clear. Drain the water. Put the seeds in a container with a lid. Cover them with cold water, 2 times the amount of seeds.

Let the seeds Soak for 10-12 hours.

Some people like to Drain the water, and then soak the seeds again for another 10-12 hours.

After soaking seeds should have sprouted at least 0.25 of an inch.

How To Grow Wheatgrass: Planting

Cover the base of the tray with paper towels so the roots do not stick out from the holes in the tray.

Fill the tray with damp soil to about 1.5 inch height.
Spread the seeds evenly and closely in one layer, on the moist soil.
Push them gently into the soil.

Water the planted tray with spray bottle or watering can.

Cover with a paper towel on top and then spray the paper towel too.
Ideally the Organic wheatgrass seeds and the paper towel will be damp all the time.
How do you know when to water? If the bottom of the tray is wet, then don’t water the seeds. If the bottom of the tray is dry you need to spray more water.

How To Grow Wheatgrass: Caring For The Seeds

Spray the sprouts twice daily, morning and evening with the Spray bottle.
When the sprouts are above 1-1.5 inch, you can decrease watering to once a day.
You can also remove the paper towel from the top and Place your tray under indirect sunlight. Wheatgrass does not like direct sunshine. It’s best to put it inside, near a window with proper ventilation.
The more indirect sunlight, the greener your wheatgrass will be.
Don’t forget to check that the soil is damp enough.

Mold is a known problem in wheatgrass trays. Mold is not dangerous.
For prevention try Cooler temperatures, less watering and better air circulation.
You can also mix 1 tablespoon of Baking Soda in a gallon of water when watering.
When the wheatgrass has reached the right height Just cut above the mold. Then wash the wheatgrass and use it.

How To Grow Wheatgrass: Collecting The Crop

When your wheatgrass reaches 6 inches its time for cutting it.
You can use a pair of scissors to cut the wheatgrass just above the seeds.
You can extend its shelf life by storing it in the coolest place possible. In a refrigerator It will last a week or longer.

Some people, after cutting once will produce a second or third crop by continuing to water the seeds. Though they may not grow as tall, you get some extra crop out of it.

Before you start a new crop, don’t forget to clean the tray.
